GPTZero vs Turnitin AI: why the same essay gets two scores

GPTZero and Turnitin AI writing are separate classifiers. They disagree because they were trained differently, score at different granularities, and get updated on different schedules. The score that matters for a course is whichever tool is attached to the assignment, usually Turnitin through the LMS.

Students screenshot GPTZero because it is free and loud. Instructors screenshot Turnitin because that is what the university paid for. Arguing GPTZero in office hours when the assignment ran Turnitin is the wrong exhibit.

Disagreement is normal. It does not mean either vendor is “broken” in a way you can litigate from a Reddit thread.

Who gets false positives?

Formulaic genres: lab reports, problem sets restated in full sentences, ESL writers who were taught a five-paragraph template, and anything with a lot of definitions. Detectors like “typical.” Typical is also how TAs told you to write.

Should you run an “AI humanizer” until every detector is 0%?

Chasing zero across every website is a hamster wheel. Models change. If you do rewrite, keep the meaning, then check the version you will actually submit on the same class of tool your school uses.

Hero HW Services pairs a humanizer (WalterWrites, StealthGPT, Tenorshare) with a non-repository Turnitin check so you are not optimizing for GPTZero while your professor opens Turnitin. Still: the school report is canonical.

People also ask

Which detector is more accurate?
Accuracy is the wrong frame. Use the detector attached to the assignment. Cross-checking is fine. Substituting a friendlier score is not.
Can I submit a GPTZero PDF as my defense?
You can bring it. Expect the instructor to open Turnitin anyway.
